Finch Foundry – National Trust

Finch Foundry water-powered forge in Devon

The last working water-powered forge in England, a fantastic place to visit with so much information and history (if this a subject of interest). Please ensure you book ahead if you want to join the 45 minute tour as it’s popular in peak season, plus it does close during the winter months. Dogs are welcome on leads

The doorway to Dartmoor’s industrial past. Enter Finch Foundry to experience the sights, sounds and smells of three thundering water wheels powering massive hammers, shears and sharpening stone. These fuelled one of the South West’s most successful edge tool factories which, at its peak, produced around 400 edge tools a day. The Finch family empire  spans multiple generations and story is an interesting one – championing early ‘girl power’ when Rebecca Finch was in control of the business.
