Located in the centre of Moretonhampstead, recently voted the best small town to live in Devon, the hotel is ideal for exploring the nearby moors, tors, rivers and woods. Its central Devon position also makes day trips easy to both north and south Devon coasts. Or simply relax in this charming, historic, Grade 2 listed Dartmoor hotel – its character recently restored with an extensive sympathetic refurbishment.
In 1775 the White Hart opened as a Posting Inn for passengers of horse-drawn carriages crossing the moor and seeking shelter – a home cooked meal, pint of local ‘scrummy’ cider and in winter roaring log fires and a cosy warm bed awaited them. This traditional hospitality of long ago still awaits our guests to this day.

These aren’t just rooms – they’re memories in the making. Each of our 28 ensuite bedrooms reflects the historic character of our Grade II-listed Dartmoor inn. Expect unique period features, tastefully updated with bespoke décor, cosy beds and luxury facilities.

In the 18th century, hungry travellers would call into the White Hart, one of a handful of trusted pubs on Dartmoor at the time, for a warm meal and a welcome pint of cider. Today, the tradition continues – but with modern flavours, intimate décor and a renewed focus on high-quality local produce. (Cider’s still on the menu, of course.)

Our cosy Dartmoor hotel put you in easy reach of Devon’s most soul-stirring landscapes. But our location is truly special. Here in Moretonhampstead, the clocks tick slowly and every direction promises new adventures. Discover how to make the most of it.

The White Hart is quite possibly one of the nicest places we visited during our time away. Where to start?
Staff, extremely helpful and very friendly, James the owner always seemed to be there, boots on the ground, serving drinks and meals, always time for a chat. Ambience, very tasteful decor, everything to a very high standard, decorated with flair and in keeping with the delightful building. Food, we ate here three times, one meal being Sunday lunch, the best roast dinner we have had in a very long time. Hot, perfectly cooked meats and vegetables and gravy granny would be proud of!
James and his partner should be very proud of what they have achieved with this beautiful hotel, bar and restaurant. Big bonus is dogs are very welcome even in the restaurant!
We stayed here for two nights with our Labrador dog. A friendly welcoming hotel with exceptional customer service, exquisite food, beautifully appointed rooms and cosy lounge and bar.
Our dog was welcomed in all areas of the hotel including the restaurant. A dog bed was provided in the room with dog bowls snacks and a ball for her to play with. Her bed was even made up each morning like ours was. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and we were soon made to feel part of the white hart family. Toby the chef and his team prepares top class food that rivals any high class restaurant. There are lovely walks and activities nearby.
This is a hotel that is a real gem, beautifully appointed, great quality and great value for money we will definitely be back.
This is a wonderful pub, The rooms are beautifully decorated, impeccably clean, and incredibly comfortable, making for a truly relaxing stay. One delightful touch was the homemade shortbread left for guests to enjoy with their tea or coffee—such a lovely treat!
Breakfast was a highlight of my visit, featuring a delicious array of hot options that catered to all tastes. The atmosphere throughout the pub is warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you arrive.
I also appreciated the fact that dogs are treated as important guests alongside their humans, which adds to the friendly and inclusive vibe. Overall, this pub is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a cozy getaway with exceptional hospitality. I can’t wait to return!
Have come for a night away with my husband for his Christmas present, lucky enough to have got a great out of season deal that included a roast, room and breakfast for £90.
All the staff were lovely and friendly , the owner / manager was available to chat with , again very friendly and informative. The decor was beautiful. Great having use of a free pool table as well as sky tv in bedrooms, the room was a grand 4 poster bed and the hotel was very dog friendly, providing dog bed and bowls , also sorted out some breakfast for our greyhound too. Will definitely be returning.
We arrived here last Saturday just in time to watch the Rugby in the bar. Great atmosphere with locals and guests alike. A real English pub. The rooms are wonderful. Very stylish and comfortably furnished in traditional style. We ate in the restaurant and the food was first class. The best we’d had in our Cornwall/Devon road trip. We were served by delightful Millie who advised on dishes and wine which was also first class. Definitely recommend this Hotel to anyone looking to stay on Dartmoor. Great staff and compliments to the Chef.
The staff are extremely friendly, the hotel has a cozy, country feel and is beautifully decorated (I believe the new owners have renovated it over the last year) and our room was comfortable and homely with the home made shortbread a nice touch.
Breakfast was excellent; one of the best full English I’ve had for a good while cooked fresh to order.
We ate in the restaurant the first night and our food was excellent, beautifully presented and delicious.
It’s a great location for exploring Dartmoor and exploring further afield (we went to RHS Rosemoor which was 55 mins away and well worth the journey).
Second visit in as many weeks to this absolute gem of a hotel, and once again the Sunday roast was outstanding.
The food is simply divine. The beef was beautifully cooked, full of flavour, and paired with the most incredible gravy, it was so good I had to keep asking for more! The presentation is spot on, generous slices of beef with just the right amount of veg and perfectly crispy potatoes tucked underneath. A packed plate without feeling overwhelming which in my mind is exactly how a roast should be done.
Had a lovely chat with James, the owner, and it was great to hear about all the exciting plans for the place. You can really feel the passion behind what they’re creating here.
We will definitely be back very soon, can highly recommended for an exceptional Sunday roast.
