Start off at North Bovey and enjoy the interesting mix of open moorland and Devon country roads as you stroll or stomp towards Whooping Rock. This iconic boulder perches upon Easdon Tor – 439 meteres above sea level, marked with a triangulation pillar. If you are wondering about it’s name, apparently the rock is known to make ‘whooping’ sounds in the high winds.
Due to it’s elevation there are fantastic views of Houndtor and Haytor, also along the walk an ancient cairn (stone grave marker) and a lovely old churchyard. The trail also takes in a country pub, as you may have but you can skip this and cut two-and-a-half miles from the route if you prefer.
It’s a dog-friendly, circular trail which takes about 4 hours if you stop at the Manaton pub, this can be shortened by a few miles and half the time to 2 hours if you prefer a quicker walk. Sturdy trainers or walking boots are recommended as the terrain is a mix of muddy moorland, stiles to climb over and some country roads.
