One of the most historic hotels on Dartmoor

Since 1775, the White Hart has been a beacon of comfort for weary travellers en route across Dartmoor from Exeter to Princetown. Now sympathetically refurbished, this Grade II-listed former posting inn stands as one of the most charming and authentic Dartmoor hotels.

Visit today and you can expect the same friendly, attentive service that guests have enjoyed for 250 years. A warm bed. A hearty, home-cooked meal. That special attention to detail that only a family-run hotel can provide.

You'll find us on the edge of Dartmoor, in the old market town of Moretonhampstead – recently voted the best small town in Devon. Walkers, weekend-breakers, those sight seeing or just relaxing. Singles, couples, groups and four-legged friends. Welcome all. This is your haven in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park.

On 14th September this year the White Hart Hotel will have been trading exactly 250 years to the day.  Recently its first licence to sell alcohol was discovered by its owner, Allen Jackson, amongst very old documents at Exeter's Heritage Centre.  It stated it was granted to a Nicholas Alway for the White Hart Inn, as it was known then, on 14th September 1775.  To mark this event two historians, Lesley Trotter and Ian Mortimer have kindly agreed to give talks at 7.30 on Thursday 11th and Sunday 14th September, respectively, about the history of the hotel and also about pubs in the town.  A black tie dinner is also being planned for later in the year with live music and entertainment.

Stay

These aren't just rooms – they're memories in the making. Each of our 28 ensuite bedrooms reflects the historic character of our Grade II-listed Dartmoor inn. Expect unique period features, tastefully updated with bespoke décor, cosy beds and luxury facilities.

A gourmet outdoor meal with wine, showcasing elegant mains, starters, and sides on a wrought iron table, ready for al fresco dining in the sun.

Food and drink

In the 18th century, hungry travellers would call into the White Hart, one of a handful of trusted pubs on Dartmoor at the time, for a warm meal and a welcome pint of cider. Today, the tradition continues – but with modern flavours, intimate décor and a renewed focus on high-quality local produce. (Cider's still on the menu, of course.)

What our guests say:

  Great stay

We loved our stay. The staff is really charming. Nice room, decent bathroom with a great shower. Amazing breakfast, also with several options for vegetarian and vegan food! Even the tea in the room was vegan optional with small packages of oat milk. Also dinner was really good.

  Solo trip

This is a great escape for a couple of hours , the management are extremely friendly. A great selection of beers with both a locals and lounge bar. Food is good too, well worth a visit if you’re in Moretonhampstead. Give it a try, you won’t regret it

Faultless service for doggies and their buddies

Perfect setting as a base for exploring Dartmoor. Unpretentious, old fashioned English coaching inn. Staff made us and the dog feel welcome at all times (doggy had a complimentary sausage of her own at breakfast). Evening meal in the lounge bar was tasty, service prompt and the Jail Ale was perfectly warmed (refer to Asterix in Britain). Highly recommend.

A hotel not to be missed

The staff could not do enough for you. The food was obviously home cooked and to name just two dishes, the batter on the fish was the best we had and it was a delight to have proper pastry on a meat pie top and bottom.

It was nice to have a family run hotel and you could tell. We would/ will go again and would highly recommend a visit.

  Excellent Dartmoor lunch. 5 stars

The White Hart has a new lunch menu that frankly elevates them to the next level...Mum had Tuna Niciose, which was as good as any restaurant in St. Tropez, I had loin of venison which melted in the mouth. These were followed by chocolate delice with raspberry sorbet, and a peach tarte tatin.

Bravo to the team. Food and service was first class.

  Lovely hotel with lovely people!

I would have loved to have spent more than one night here. The staff at check in was kind, the room was very comfortable, and the inn simply charming. The restaurant was delicious--some of the best batter on fish and chips I had on my England trip this time.

Delicious afternoon tea which was allergen safe

Given 48 hours notice of my allergies, the hotel has just given me and my husband the best afternoon tea experience we’ve had in a long time.

Fantastic hotel to stay in great value accommodation, food and service. We stayed at the hotel to walk and it was great

The staff were so helpful with nothing too much trouble. We ate in the restaurant and found the food good and not overpriced.
