One of the oldest hotels on Dartmoor

Since 1775, the White Hart has been a beacon of comfort for weary travellers en route across Dartmoor from Exeter to Princetown. Now sympathetically refurbished, this Grade II-listed former posting inn stands as one of the most charming and authentic Dartmoor hotels.

Visit today and you can expect the same friendly, attentive service that guests have enjoyed for 250 years. A warm bed. A hearty, home-cooked meal. That special attention to detail that only a family-run hotel can provide.

You'll find us on the edge of Dartmoor, in the old market town of Moretonhampstead – recently voted the best small town in Devon. Walkers, weekend-breakers, those sight seeing or just relaxing. Singles, couples, groups and four-legged friends. Welcome all. This is your haven in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park.

On the weekend of 13th and 14th September this year the hotel celebrates exactly 250 years of trading as its first licence to sell alcohol was found recently by its owner, Allen Jackson, among very old documents at Exeter's Heritage Centre.  It was granted to a Nicholas Alway for the White Hart Inn, as it was known then, on 14th September 1775.  To celebrate, a black tie dinner is planned for Saturday 13th September (reservations essential and welcome) as well as historians giving talks on the Thursday and Sunday evenings. See events for more details.

Stay

These aren't just rooms – they're memories in the making. Each of our 28 ensuite bedrooms reflects the historic character of our Grade II-listed Dartmoor inn. Expect unique period features, tastefully updated with bespoke décor, cosy beds and luxury facilities.

A gourmet outdoor meal with wine, showcasing elegant mains, starters, and sides on a wrought iron table, ready for al fresco dining in the sun.

Food and drink

In the 18th century, hungry travellers would call into the White Hart, one of a handful of trusted pubs on Dartmoor at the time, for a warm meal and a welcome pint of cider. Today, the tradition continues – but with modern flavours, intimate décor and a renewed focus on high-quality local produce. (Cider's still on the menu, of course.)
