Celebrating 250 Years of the White Hart
After an extensive dive into local history, we are thrilled to have finally discovered the date when the White Hart was first granted a licence to sell alcohol.
The White Hart Inn was originally an old posting inn where horses were changed on their journey from Exeter to Princetown. The building itself dates back to 1400 and was initially residential, but it was destroyed by fire in 1771.
We have known that the White Hart opened sometime in 1775, but until recently, we were unable to pinpoint an exact date. That is, until now! With the Jackson family taking over the hotel in 2024 and dedicated to restoring it to its former glory, they are equally committed to uncovering as much history about their new hotel as possible.
After thorough research, documents found in the Chudleigh area court finally revealed the White Hart’s secrets. Records show that a Nicholas Alway was granted the first licence on 14th September 1775 for the White Hart to sell alcohol.
So, of course, we are celebrating the 250th anniversary of the White Hart as the hotel and inn you see today.
Between 11th and 14th September, we will be hosting historian talks, a black-tie supper club, and even a real-life Cluedo event to give the hotel the celebration it deserves!
